Business travel can be a strain on any family. But when you’re on the road, staying in touch can make the separation easier for everyone.
Here are some ideas for staying close when you’re far away:
- Take pictures. Bring a digital camera to capture a few images from the city you’re traveling to, and share them when you get home. Or send them directly via your cell phone. Even a shot of your hotel room can make children feel a connection to you.
- Communicate regularly. Send e-mails and text messages as often as you can. A short message can mean a lot to the people missing you at home.
- Encourage kids to stay in touch. Have your children fax pictures drawn at school to your hotel, or e-mail you with homework questions, so they know they can reach you when they need to.
- Don’t go right back to work. If you return in the middle of the day, head home first. Take your spouse to lunch, or pick your children up from school, to show you’ve got your priorities straight.

There’s an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal about how physicians treat themselves when it comes to health and wellness. A study found that “Doctors were more likely to opt for treatments with a higher chance of death — but lower risk of serious side effects — for themselves than for their patients.”
So what does this mean for you? Dr. Ubel, a study author and professor at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, recommends the following:
- “’don’t ask for advice until the doctor understands you a little better,’ including how you weigh issues such as quality of life versus length of life.”
- “when a physician gives advice, ask why he or she is making that recommendation, to ensure the reasons align with your preferences”
We recommend including your pharmacist as part of our health care team. Especially when it comes to medication decisions. Adding a pharmacist to the mix brings another level of dialogue to the mix to ensure that you’re getting the best information to make a decision. You are your best health advocate! To read the article in the Wall Street Journal, click here.
Have questions about your medications? Come in to Live Oak Pharmacy today and speak with our pharmacist. We can set up a consultation to review your current medications and discuss treatment options with you and your health care provider to help you live your best life!

Welcome to Skin’s In! Skin’s In is a bi-weekly new segment to the Live Oak Pharmacy blog specifically about skin care and how it relates to your overall health & wellness. Enjoy and if you have suggestions or feedback, please let us know!

Summer is too long in Texas to be concerned about how you look in a sleeveless shirt. We recently came across an article by Dr. Jessica Wu on the subject of dark armpits and here’s what we found out for you.
- Dark & course underarm hair can make your armpits appear darker, even after shaving. Consider waxing instead which removes the root of the hair.
- Ask your dermatologist about erythrasma. Erythrasma is a bacterial infection that typically appears on just one side, not both. By using a special light, your dermatologist can properly diagnose and prescribe a topical antibiotic creams or oral antibiotics from Live Oak Pharmacy.
- Another cause may be the skin condition Acanthosis nigricans. Acanthosis nigricans produces brownish gray velvety patches on the underarms, the sides of the neck, and the inner thighs. Often times it’s hereditary but weight gain and diabetes can also cause it. Talk with your doctor to find out more and what it’s underlying cause is. Treatment may include customized compounded creams prescribed by your doctor.
If you have questions about compounds or you’d like us to contact your physician to tell them more about compounded prescriptions, give us a call at 512-476-8979 ext. 1.

A study from the Women’s Health Initiative shows the increased risk of stroke found among women who take estrogen-only hormone therapy disappears after they stop the pills but the reduced risk of breast cancer — believed by some to result from hormone use after natural menopause — is maintained.
Navigating through this all can be confusing. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be. Live Oak Pharmacy offers Hormone Restoration Consultations and we work directly with you and your prescriber to get you the facts and help customize a plan specifically for you. To sign up for more information, fill out the form below and one of our team members will contact you with more information.

Earth Day is this month and here are some suggestions for saving energy (and expenses) at work:
- Lights. Turn them off when no one needs them, of course, and replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs). Place stickers on light switches to remind people to save energy.
- Computers and appliances. Electronic appliances still draw power when they’re turned off. Plug them into power strips that allow you to completely cut the energy flow when you power them down.
- Heating and cooling. During warm weather, adjust your office blinds to reflect the sun’s heat away from your windows. Wear light, loose clothes so you don’t need to run the air conditioner more than necessary. In the winter, keep shades closed to enclose warm air inside your workspace, and wear warmer, layered clothes to work.
- Water. Check your faucets for drips, which can waste more water than you may imagine.
- Energy bills. Audit your expenses regularly to see how much you’ve been able to reduce your energy costs.

All of us at Live Oak Pharmacy are excited to announce that our pharmacist, Nathan Pope, has been nominated for FedEx + Me. FedEx + Me is a program that started here in Austin and is search for small businesses that exemplifies Austin’s small-business community’s spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial drive.
You can vote by visiting: http://LiveOakRx.com/vote
If you’ve gotten a message from me and voted, thank you – I really appreciate it. If you haven’t yet voted, here a few reasons why you might want to vote for Nathan & Live Oak Pharmacy.
- Live Oak Pharmacy will be 1 year old on Saturday April 2!
- In that short year, through Nathan’s leadership we launched the medication take back program and have collected nearly 500 pounds of unused medications that would have gone in the water supply or into a landfill or worse yet to a child or pet by accident.
- Nathan not only is the co-owner of Live Oak Pharmacy but he’s also a Clinical Assistant Professor at UT. He coordinates the residency program and he also guides students through interships here at Live Oak Pharmacy.
- Nathan volunteers within (current President of the Capital Area Pharmacists Association) and outside of the profession (newest board member of AIDS Services of Austin.)
- He works really hard and as a pharmacist he has to, by law, be in the pharmacy every hour we are open (that’s 55 hours!)
I’m thrilled for both Nathan and Live Oak Pharmacy and we really appreciate all the support y’all have given us. Thanks again for voting and could you ask one or two friends to vote as well? Here’s that link again: http://LiveOakRx.com/vote

The adhesive bandage is commonplace in medicine cabinets and first-aid kits around the world. It was invented in 1921 by Earle Dickson, an employee of Johnson & Johnson. Dickson was concerned for his wife Josephine, who suffered frequent cuts and burns in the kitchen. They originally tried to wrap Josephine’s wounds in gauze and adhesive tape, but the dressing usually fell off in a short time. Dickson tried placing some gauze in the center of a piece of tape, and covering the whole thing with crinoline to keep it sterile.
The invention worked so well for his wife that he took some to work to show to his colleagues. The company owner, James Johnson, caught wind of the idea, asked for a demonstration, and ultimately decided the company should manufacture them. And Dickson went on to have a successful career at Johnson & Johnson, becoming a vice president before his retirement in 1957.
Adhesive bandages have come a long way since the Band-Aid, check out Help, I Cut Myself at Live Oak Pharmacy! The perfect size for anyone on the go!

Spring is here in Austin and what could be more peaceful and relaxing than taking a boat out on the water for a lazy afternoon? Whether you’re cruising in a yacht or drifting in a rowboat, however, your ultimate goal is a safe trip. Keep these guidelines in mind for smooth sailing and a happy return to dry land:
- Plan your cruise – Even if you’re just going to drop anchor in the middle of the lake for a snooze, tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to come back. If something goes wrong, every minute could count.
- Wear your life jacket – No matter how good a swimmer you or your companions may be, a personal floatation device (PFD) like a life jacket is essential for everyone’s safety on the water.
- Watch the weather – Storms can sweep across the lake in a matter of minutes, no matter how clear the sky looks when you cast off. Check the weather forecast so that bad weather doesn’t catch you by surprise.
- Check your equipment - Examine your lights, anchor, fire extinguisher, engine, and other equipment to be sure everything is in good working order.
- Don’t drink and sail - Just like drinking and driving, alcohol and boating aren’t a safe combination. The open sea can be unpredictable enough when your judgment is unimpaired, so don’t take any chances.
- Watch your speed – There may be no posted speed limits on the water, but that doesn’t mean you can push your engines as far as they’ll go. Remember that you can’t hit the brake in a boat, and be sure to keep a safe speed to avoid danger.
- Don’t forget the sunscreen – It may feel cool & breezy on the water but your exposed to double trouble, struck by the sun’s rays from above and also from below, reflected off the water. Have questions about what’s right for you and your activity? Come in and talk with our pharmacist today!

Take this quiz and learn something about the role of five particular women in U.S. history:
- Which mother led a 125-mile march of child workers from the mills of Pennsylvania to President Theodore Roosevelt’s vacation home on Long Island?
- What did Dolores Huerta do for farm workers in the United States?
- Which Asian-American physicist disproved a fundamental scientific law?
- Who led the movement to improve conditions for poor immigrants?
- Her 1939 Easter Sunday concert drew a crowd of 75,000 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Who was she?

Answers
- Mary Harris Jones, who became known as “Mother Jones,” led the march in 1903 to call attention to the evils of child labor.
- Dolores Huerta, a labor activist, co-founded the United Farm Workers union in 1962 and served for more than 20 years as its vice president, chief lobbyist, spokeswoman, and labor contract negotiator.
- Chien-Shiung Wu came to the United States to study science and become the world’s foremost female experimental physicist. Her most famous experiment showed that the principle of conservation of parity (which states that the laws of physics in a right-handed system of coordinates are the same in a left-handed system) could be violated in nature.
- Jane Addams co-founded Hull House in Chicago in 1889, which sought to improve the lives of immigrants by providing English classes, child care, health education, and recreation. Addams won the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize for her dedication to the cause of international peace.
- Marian Anderson had earlier been barred from singing in Washington’s Constitution Hall because she was black. Her open-air concert was a triumph over bigotry.
