For Renoir, paint trumped pain

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Although Henri Matisse was nearly 28 years younger than Auguste Renoir, the two great artists were dear friends and frequent companions.

When Renoir was confined to his home during the last decade of his life, Matisse visited him daily. Renoir, almost paralyzed by arthritis, continued to paint in spite of his infirmities.

One day as Matisse watched the elder painter working in his studio, fighting torturous pain with each brush stroke, he blurted out: “Auguste, why do you continue to paint when you are in such agony?”

Renoir answered simply: “The beauty remains; the pain passes.”

And so, almost to his dying day, Renoir put paint to canvas.

One of his most famous paintings, “The Bathers,” was completed just two years before his passing, 14 years after he was stricken by the disabling disease.

Has Your Kid Got a Fever? Don’t Rush to Dole out Drugs

Monday, February 28th, 2011

A recent post in Time Magazine’s Healthland probes the question on when to medicate a sick child with a fever. “Bottom line: in otherwise healthy children, there’s really no temperature at which you have to treat a fever.” Not sure what’s the best solution for medicating your child? Come in and talk with our pharmacist today.

A few tips to keep in mind . . .

  • Dosages should be decided according to weight, not age.
  • Step away from the kitchen teaspoon; it’s not a reliable way to dispense liquid medication. Live Oak Pharmacy dispenses proper dosage spoons with each liquid medicine.
  • If you’re not sure, ask the pharmacist. A pharmacist does more than dispense medicines. They are a valuable resource for understanding the medications you are giving to everyone in your family!

Is it just a headache—or a migraine?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

For most people, a headache is a minor annoyance, easily vanquished with a few painkillers. But for the 28 million Americans who suffer from migraines, the headache can be devastating: a throbbing pain that can last anywhere from a few hours to three days, and usually striking at least once a month.

The exact causes aren’t fully known, but migraines appear to be related to enlargement and contraction of the brain’s blood vessels, and they have a hereditary component. Migraines can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Some migraines are preceded by “auras.” About 20 percent of migraine sufferers report warning signs before the attack’s onset: distorted vision, bright flashing lights in a zigzag pattern, or a blind spot. Warning signs also include fatigue and drowsiness, irritability, extremes of emotion, and cravings for sweet or salty foods.

Not certain if you’re having a migraine or just a really bad headache? Watch for these symptoms:
  • Pain. A migraine may be moderate to severe and is usually limited to one side of the head, though it may switch sides (and in about one-third of cases, a migraine can attack both sides of the head). The pain is typically described as pounding or pulsing.
  • Light. Migraine sufferers are usually more sensitive to bright light than other people.
  • Physical activity. Pain usually gets worse with common physical activities like walking up stairs.
  • Stomach ailments. As noted above, migraines can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

If you do suffer from migraine attacks, various treatments are available. Acetaminophen, aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can alleviate pain. Biofeedback relaxation techniques, ice packs, and acupuncture have also proven effective. If one is able to sleep, that usually helps.

In general, a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition, lots of fluids, and sufficient sleep and exercise can go a long way toward preventing migraines from striking. And remember that if you have questions about headaches, migraine or other health care concerns you can come in and speak with our pharmacist.

Generosity smells like . . . lemons?

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Proust found deep memories in the aroma of a madeleine (a small sponge cake with a distinctive shell-like shape), but the journal Psychological Science reported that the right scent may stimulate fairness and generosity.

In an experiment, groups of subjects were placed in two different rooms, one of which had been sprayed with a citrus-scented cleaner. In the first part of the test, subjects were given cash and asked to share some of it with an anonymous person in another room. In the citrus-scented room, participants gave away twice as much money.

For the test’s second part, participants were quizzed about their willingness to volunteer their time for community work and to donate money to charity. Again, subjects in the more aromatic room expressed more interest in volunteering, and they were three times more likely to indicate that they would make donations.

So do clean smells produce better behavior? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s one more reason to keep the air lemony fresh.

Quiet down your workplace to protect your heart

Thursday, February 10th, 2011
Want to avoid a heart attack? Stay out of loud, noisy workplaces. That’s the finding of a national study of over 6,000 workers examining data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 1999 to 2004.

The researchers found that 21 percent of respondents said they had worked in a noisy environment for close to nine consecutive months, and they were two to three times more likely to have serious heart problems than employees in quieter atmospheres.

These workers tended to weigh more and smoke more than their counterparts in quiet workplaces. The association between noise and heart problems was elevated in workers under 50, who were three to four times more likely to have suffered a heart attack or to have coronary artery disease or angina.

The study’s authors say the findings suggest that “excess noise exposure in the workplace is an important occupational health issue and deserves special attention.”

Work for yourself? Looking for a professional yet quiet environment to protect your heart? Check out Link Coworking. Link Coworking is a membership club that brings people together who share the need for a place to conduct their business in an interactive space.

School of Fish – Mercury Rising?

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Sarah Harper, Fishmongress at Quality Seafood Market, writes a monthly article for Live Oak Pharmacy on seafood as an essential part of whole body wellness.

Mercury Rising?

Many of you are probably considering a new diet for the New Year. And I hope seafood constitutes a healthy part of that regimen. Among other essential nutrients, fish and shellfish are high in protein and often low in saturated fat, and most contain omega-3 fatty acids that have been linked to heart health. But along with the plethora of information available regarding the health benefits of a diet rich in seafood, there’s a lot of information about some of the health risks. Intended to educate more than scare, this blog post focuses on the most notorious offender, mercury, and how you can avoid it at the seafood market.

In general, fish with the greatest levels of mercury are those that are higher up on the food chain, such as shark and swordfish. When shopping for seafood, keep in mind the “small fish rule”: the smaller the fish, the less mercury it contains. Large fish that take longer to mature usually have more time and greater opportunity to consume smaller fish and amass more mercury in their flesh.

Another rule of thumb, one that may seem obvious but that is often overlooked by the average seafood shopper, is that freshwater fish have lower mercury content. Some good freshwater options are bluegill, perch, stream trout, herring, smelt, and crawfish.*

In addition, farm-raised fish are typically lower in mercury than wild-caught fish. Whenever possible buy U.S.-raised product; most imported product is not held to the same standards as domestic fish and shellfish. Look for U.S.-raised catfish, trout, oysters, mussels, clams, and shrimp.

If you prefer marine fish and shellfish, here are some good low-mercury options: shrimp, salmon, pollock, flatfish (flounder, sole, plaice), scallops, haddock, mullet, oysters, ocean perch, sardines, squid, and anchovies.  Also, check out this guide compiled by Tim Fitzgerald of the non-profit group, Environmental Defense. It’s the only one I’ve come across so far that combines the concepts of shopping sustainably while simultaneously monitoring your mercury intake.

This may be a lot of information to process, let alone remember when you’re standing at the seafood counter trying to figure out what’s fresh and what’s within your budget. If you remember just one thing, remember that the key to a healthy seafood diet is variety. Like most foods, too much of a good thing can have its drawbacks, so change the menu frequently and add a little variety to your diet.**

*If you are pregnant or nursing, limit your consumption of freshwater predator fish, such as walleye, bass, and Northern pike, to less than six ounces per week (the “small fish rule” still applies to freshwater fish).

**The Mayo Clinic recommends that pregnant and nursing women and young children consume “no more than 12 ounces (340 grams) of fish in total a week, no more than 6 ounces (170 grams) of canned tuna a week, and no amount of any fish that’s typically high in mercury” (e.g., shark, swordfish, tilefish, and king mackerel).

Press Release: 5 states reported widespread flu activity and 13 more states reported regional flu activity.

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Austin, Texas (January 3, 2011) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released an updated Situation Update stating an increase in influenza activity since the week ending December 25, 2010. In addition to the increased activity of influenza is the news that these numbers are higher than expected for this time of year. Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, New York and Virginia have reported widespread flu activity and 13 states including Texas have reported regional geographic influenza activity.

“We can’t stress enough the importance of getting a flu shot if you haven’t received one this season” says Nathan Pope, Pharm.D. and co-owner of Live Oak Pharmacy “In fact the CDC has recommended everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine.” Live Oak Pharmacy offers preservative free flu shots.

In addition to flu shots, Live Oak Pharmacy also offers a variety of other vaccines including pneumonia, shingles, and pertussis (whooping cough). For those already combating the flu, Live Oak Pharmacy offers a variety of traditional, homeopathic and alternative choices. Live Oak Pharmacy recommends the following tips to protect your health during cold and flu season:

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Try to avoid close contact with those with a cold or the flu.

Stay home if you are sick until at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100°F or 37.8°C) or signs of a fever (without the use of a fever-reducing medicine, such as Tylenol®).

While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

For questions about the flu or the flu shot, please call us today at Live Oak Pharmacy at 512-476-TXRx (8979) ext 1 or visit us online at http://LiveOakRx.com/flu.

Why eat your vegetables? Not just to get to dessert faster

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Mother always said, “Eat your vegetables.” The problem is that too many of us still aren’t listening to her. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 26 percent of U.S. adults eat three or more servings of vegetables a day, although current recommendations call for four to five servings. The benefits are significant: Eating the right kind of vegetables in the appropriate quantities can cut one’s risk of diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, and other serious illnesses.

What kinds of vegetables should you be eating? Well, all kinds, but here’s what you’re getting:

Fiber. Beans and other high-fiber vegetables fill the stomach, reducing your cravings for more food while reducing cholesterol levels and improving digestion and regularity.
Potassium. Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, and winter squash improve blood pressure. They may also reduce the risk of kidney stones and bone loss.
Vitamin A. Carrots, pumpkin, kale, collard greens, and other veggies enhance the health of eyes and skin. Beta-carotene and other carotenoids cut one’s risk of macular degeneration, cataracts, coronary artery disease, and stomach cancer.
Folates. Asparagus, black-eyed peas, spinach, and other folates consumed during pregnancy help prevent birth defects, especially to the spinal cord, and help the body form red blood cells.
