School of Fish: Letting the cat(fish) out of the bag

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Sarah Harper, Fishmongress at Quality Seafood Market, writes a monthly article for Live Oak Pharmacy on seafood as an essential part of whole body wellness.

There’s a lot of buzz lately about the proposed rule on catfish inspections. I thought I’d dedicate this blog post to summing up the debate for those of you who haven’t been following it on a daily basis. I encourage you to share your knowledge and opinions in the comments section.

On February 18th, the USDA published its much-anticipated rule on catfish inspection as mandated by the 2008 Farm Bill. If adopted, the rule would require that the aquaculture, processing, and transportation of catfish and catfish products be inspected by the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) – much like beef and poultry. Catfish is currently subject to the regulatory capacity of the Food and Drug Administration (not the USDA). The rule would pertain to both imported and domestically-raised catfish, and it would attempt to regulate factors that affect consumer-safety such as the quality of water and feed. Under the new rule, all products bearing the name “catfish” would have to bear an FSIS (or similar foreign agency) seal of approval.

The crux of the debate surround the rule rests on issue of how to actually define “catfish.” The USDA has proposed to two definitions and asked for comments. The first would include all species in the family Ictaluridae – species that dominate the domestic catfish industry – and the second, broader definition would include species within the order Siluriformes, encompassing the three families Ictaluridae, Pangasiidae, and Clariidae – species that are favored by foreign catfish growers. If the USDA chooses the latter definition, it risks upsetting the Bilateral Free Trade Agreement with Vietnam, and if it adopts the former, it will upset the Catfish Farmers of America (CFA) who claim that foreign catfish farms – by and large – do not observe safe practices in aquaculture, thus allowing them to bring a cheaper product to market, at the expense of US consumers’ long-term health. A recent article published in Vietnam News cites ongoing survey efforts by two Vietnamese organizations – the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development and the Fisheries Quality Assurance and Aquatic Resources Protection Department – that have made recommendations that Ho Chi Minh City’s rivers are too polluted for aquaculture.

Senator John McCain (R-Ariz) and Senator John Coburn (R-Okla), have taken aim at the new rule, proposing a bill that would annul the transfer of regulatory power over the catfish industry from the FDA to the USDA. Viewing the rule as “protectionist,” Sen. McCain claims Vietnamese catfish “are virtually indistinguishable from U.S. grown catfish.” Butch Wilson, the president of the CFA, responded to the senator’s claim: “It is stunning that Sen. McCain has chosen to protect importers and Vietnamese farmers over the health and safety of American citizens.” Mr. Wilson also noted that rule could not be considered protectionist if it applied to both domestic and imported catfish. He added that the USDA, which requires more frequent inspections, would have far more regulatory reach than the FDA, whose agency only inspects processing facilities on an annual or bi-annual basis.

The USDA is accepting comments on the rule through June 24, 2011. To submit a comment, visit www.regulations.gov (you must identify FSIS and docket number FSIS-2008-0031). You may also contact your senator regarding the proposed bill S.496.

St. Patrick: the myth and the man

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

For some, St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) is a reason to wear green, go to a parade, and drink more Irish whiskey than usual. But just who was this St. Patrick fellow?

The most common belief is that he drove the snakes out of Ireland. Ireland probably never had snakes, though, and the myth may refer to Patrick’s efforts to stamp out the serpent imagery used by the Druids. He also may have used the three-leafed shamrock to illustrate the concept of the Holy Trinity to the people he was trying to convert to Christianity as a missionary in Ireland during the fifth century.

Historians agree that Patrick was born in Roman-occupied Britain, the son of a Christian deacon. At age 16 he was captured and taken to Ireland, where he was a slave for six years. During this time, his Christian faith strengthened, and one day he heard a voice (according to a letter he wrote about his early life) promising he would soon return home. Shortly afterward he escaped, found his way to a ship, and went back to his family.

An angel appeared to him in a dream, he later wrote, telling him to return to Ireland as a missionary. After a long period of religious training, Patrick went back to the land where he had been a slave to convert the Irish and to minister to those Christians living there.

March 17 is believed to be the date of his death. Although never formally canonized, Patrick came to be considered a saint, and March 17 was celebrated as a religious holiday until 1903, when it became a public holiday in Ireland by an act of the British Parliament.

Don’t make yourself sick when getting in shape

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Exercise is an important element of good health, but you’ve got to approach it with good judgment. Follow this basic advice for getting in shape safely:

  • Start off slowly. If you haven’t exercised in a while, don’t jump into a strenuous routine. Consult with your doctor to find out what’s safe. Start each workout with a warmup to ease your body into the session.
  • Get the right equipment. Running in the wrong shoes or biking without a helmet can be dangerous. Don’t take chances with old or used equipment. If you’re not sure what you need, ask a trainer or someone with experience.
  • Wear suitable clothing. Loose, comfortable clothing is essential. Wear fabrics that absorb sweat, so your body doesn’t overheat. If you’re exercising outdoors in cold weather, wear a warm hat and gloves; in hot weather, wear a cap to stay cool.
  • Watch the weather. Don’t go outside to work out in extreme temperatures. Wear sunscreen, winter or summer. In cold weather, dress in layers. During the summer months, exercise in the morning or late in the day to avoid excessive heat.
  • Drink plenty of water. Keeping hydrated is important before, during, and after exercise. Take a drink every 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Pay attention to surroundings. When you’re outdoors, don’t “zone out.” Watch out for traffic, other people, rough surfaces, and other dangers. Even in the gym, keep your eyes open and your mind engaged to prevent accidents with equipment or other exercisers.
  • Listen to the warning signs. Don’t try to “work through” pain. Slow down if you get short of breath. If you get dizzy or feel nauseated, or feel pain in your chest, neck, shoulders, or arms, stop exercising immediately. If the symptoms don’t go away, call your doctor.

Have questions about how to get back into shape and how supplements can help you with that process? Come into Live Oak Pharmacy today and talk with our pharmacist! Live Oak Pharmacy carries supplements that meet the highest standards and are not available at a health food store or commercial vitamin shop. And save the date for our Un-Presentation on Tuesday March 1 to learn about NEO40 with Dr. Zand of Neogenis Labs. To RSVP, call us today 512-476-8979 ext. 1 or RSVP online by clicking here.

Is it just a headache—or a migraine?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

For most people, a headache is a minor annoyance, easily vanquished with a few painkillers. But for the 28 million Americans who suffer from migraines, the headache can be devastating: a throbbing pain that can last anywhere from a few hours to three days, and usually striking at least once a month.

The exact causes aren’t fully known, but migraines appear to be related to enlargement and contraction of the brain’s blood vessels, and they have a hereditary component. Migraines can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Some migraines are preceded by “auras.” About 20 percent of migraine sufferers report warning signs before the attack’s onset: distorted vision, bright flashing lights in a zigzag pattern, or a blind spot. Warning signs also include fatigue and drowsiness, irritability, extremes of emotion, and cravings for sweet or salty foods.

Not certain if you’re having a migraine or just a really bad headache? Watch for these symptoms:
  • Pain. A migraine may be moderate to severe and is usually limited to one side of the head, though it may switch sides (and in about one-third of cases, a migraine can attack both sides of the head). The pain is typically described as pounding or pulsing.
  • Light. Migraine sufferers are usually more sensitive to bright light than other people.
  • Physical activity. Pain usually gets worse with common physical activities like walking up stairs.
  • Stomach ailments. As noted above, migraines can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

If you do suffer from migraine attacks, various treatments are available. Acetaminophen, aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can alleviate pain. Biofeedback relaxation techniques, ice packs, and acupuncture have also proven effective. If one is able to sleep, that usually helps.

In general, a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition, lots of fluids, and sufficient sleep and exercise can go a long way toward preventing migraines from striking. And remember that if you have questions about headaches, migraine or other health care concerns you can come in and speak with our pharmacist.

Quiet down your workplace to protect your heart

Thursday, February 10th, 2011
Want to avoid a heart attack? Stay out of loud, noisy workplaces. That’s the finding of a national study of over 6,000 workers examining data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 1999 to 2004.

The researchers found that 21 percent of respondents said they had worked in a noisy environment for close to nine consecutive months, and they were two to three times more likely to have serious heart problems than employees in quieter atmospheres.

These workers tended to weigh more and smoke more than their counterparts in quiet workplaces. The association between noise and heart problems was elevated in workers under 50, who were three to four times more likely to have suffered a heart attack or to have coronary artery disease or angina.

The study’s authors say the findings suggest that “excess noise exposure in the workplace is an important occupational health issue and deserves special attention.”
