Practice the positive values of inspiration

Monday, March 7th, 2011
This week is RISE Austin and next is South by Southwest. Creative juices will be overflowing in the next several weeks! Creativity isn’t just a process. It’s a value. To become more creative, you have to accept the beliefs and practice the behaviors that help creativity to flourish. For a more inspired and creative life, here are a few of the values you should live:

  • A sense of wonder. Don’t take a cynical, seen-it-all attitude. Pretend you’re a child experiencing everything in life for the first time. Ask questions about the world around you.
  • Pursuit of ideas. Don’t hold back. As soon as you feel a spark of interest in something, regardless of how “practical” it seems, let yourself go with it. Follow your ideas wherever they take you.
  • Courage. You’ve got to be fearless and not worry about what others may think. Don’t try to be like everyone else. Take your own approach, whatever you’re doing.
  • Patience. You can’t hurry creativity, so take time to ponder your ideas. Sit down, relax, have a cup of tea, and think things over. That’s usually how the best ideas bloom.

Live Oak Pharmacy is Austin’s Integrative Compounding Pharmacy located downtown. Since we compound you could say that we’re Austin’s Creative Pharmacy. After all compounding is seeking solutions to problems that traditional medications can’t or don’t solve. Have a problem that needs some creative solutions? Come in and see our pharmacist today! Live Oak Pharmacy, your creative pharmacy!

For Renoir, paint trumped pain

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Although Henri Matisse was nearly 28 years younger than Auguste Renoir, the two great artists were dear friends and frequent companions.

When Renoir was confined to his home during the last decade of his life, Matisse visited him daily. Renoir, almost paralyzed by arthritis, continued to paint in spite of his infirmities.

One day as Matisse watched the elder painter working in his studio, fighting torturous pain with each brush stroke, he blurted out: “Auguste, why do you continue to paint when you are in such agony?”

Renoir answered simply: “The beauty remains; the pain passes.”

And so, almost to his dying day, Renoir put paint to canvas.

One of his most famous paintings, “The Bathers,” was completed just two years before his passing, 14 years after he was stricken by the disabling disease.

Is pain not letting you do the things you love? Come in and talk with our pharmacist today to see what your treatment options might be. Has Your Kid Got a Fever? Don’t Rush to Dole out Drugs

Monday, February 28th, 2011

A recent post in Time Magazine’s Healthland probes the question on when to medicate a sick child with a fever. “Bottom line: in otherwise healthy children, there’s really no temperature at which you have to treat a fever.” Not sure what’s the best solution for medicating your child? Come in and talk with our pharmacist today.

A few tips to keep in mind . . .

  • Dosages should be decided according to weight, not age.
  • Step away from the kitchen teaspoon; it’s not a reliable way to dispense liquid medication. Live Oak Pharmacy dispenses proper dosage spoons with each liquid medicine.
  • If you’re not sure, ask the pharmacist. A pharmacist does more than dispense medicines. They are a valuable resource for understanding the medications you are giving to everyone in your family!

Don’t make yourself sick when getting in shape

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Exercise is an important element of good health, but you’ve got to approach it with good judgment. Follow this basic advice for getting in shape safely:

  • Start off slowly. If you haven’t exercised in a while, don’t jump into a strenuous routine. Consult with your doctor to find out what’s safe. Start each workout with a warmup to ease your body into the session.
  • Get the right equipment. Running in the wrong shoes or biking without a helmet can be dangerous. Don’t take chances with old or used equipment. If you’re not sure what you need, ask a trainer or someone with experience.
  • Wear suitable clothing. Loose, comfortable clothing is essential. Wear fabrics that absorb sweat, so your body doesn’t overheat. If you’re exercising outdoors in cold weather, wear a warm hat and gloves; in hot weather, wear a cap to stay cool.
  • Watch the weather. Don’t go outside to work out in extreme temperatures. Wear sunscreen, winter or summer. In cold weather, dress in layers. During the summer months, exercise in the morning or late in the day to avoid excessive heat.
  • Drink plenty of water. Keeping hydrated is important before, during, and after exercise. Take a drink every 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Pay attention to surroundings. When you’re outdoors, don’t “zone out.” Watch out for traffic, other people, rough surfaces, and other dangers. Even in the gym, keep your eyes open and your mind engaged to prevent accidents with equipment or other exercisers.
  • Listen to the warning signs. Don’t try to “work through” pain. Slow down if you get short of breath. If you get dizzy or feel nauseated, or feel pain in your chest, neck, shoulders, or arms, stop exercising immediately. If the symptoms don’t go away, call your doctor.

Have questions about how to get back into shape and how supplements can help you with that process? Come into Live Oak Pharmacy today and talk with our pharmacist! Live Oak Pharmacy carries supplements that meet the highest standards and are not available at a health food store or commercial vitamin shop. And save the date for our Un-Presentation on Tuesday March 1 to learn about NEO40 with Dr. Zand of Neogenis Labs. To RSVP, call us today 512-476-8979 ext. 1 or RSVP online by clicking here.

Is it just a headache—or a migraine?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

For most people, a headache is a minor annoyance, easily vanquished with a few painkillers. But for the 28 million Americans who suffer from migraines, the headache can be devastating: a throbbing pain that can last anywhere from a few hours to three days, and usually striking at least once a month.

The exact causes aren’t fully known, but migraines appear to be related to enlargement and contraction of the brain’s blood vessels, and they have a hereditary component. Migraines can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Some migraines are preceded by “auras.” About 20 percent of migraine sufferers report warning signs before the attack’s onset: distorted vision, bright flashing lights in a zigzag pattern, or a blind spot. Warning signs also include fatigue and drowsiness, irritability, extremes of emotion, and cravings for sweet or salty foods.

Not certain if you’re having a migraine or just a really bad headache? Watch for these symptoms:
  • Pain. A migraine may be moderate to severe and is usually limited to one side of the head, though it may switch sides (and in about one-third of cases, a migraine can attack both sides of the head). The pain is typically described as pounding or pulsing.
  • Light. Migraine sufferers are usually more sensitive to bright light than other people.
  • Physical activity. Pain usually gets worse with common physical activities like walking up stairs.
  • Stomach ailments. As noted above, migraines can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

If you do suffer from migraine attacks, various treatments are available. Acetaminophen, aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can alleviate pain. Biofeedback relaxation techniques, ice packs, and acupuncture have also proven effective. If one is able to sleep, that usually helps.

In general, a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition, lots of fluids, and sufficient sleep and exercise can go a long way toward preventing migraines from striking. And remember that if you have questions about headaches, migraine or other health care concerns you can come in and speak with our pharmacist.
