November is National Family Caregiver’s Month

Monday, November 1st, 2010

As the population ages, more of us are taking on the task of providing long-term care for our elderly relatives. It can be an emotionally and physically draining responsibility. And the first prescription in taking good care of loved ones is making sure you, the caregiver, are healthy too.
Take these steps to ensure you care for yourself as well as your loved one:

  1. Keep in mind that the task at hand may be a lengthy one. Be disciplined enough to take rest periods and reduce the level of effort from time to time.
  2. Get help. There are a number of organizations that help caregivers with chores and other tasks. For example: Meals on Wheels or overnight respite care lets you get away for a weekend and Live Oak Pharmacy offers free prescription delivery in 78704, 78703 and 78701.
  3. Take care of yourself. Exercise. Eat a balanced diet. In short, maintain your own physical health, schedule a massage with the team at Clarksville Massage & Acupuncture.
  4. Explore support systems. If you find yourself getting depressed, seek professional help or support groups.
