A Few Good Reasons to Smile!

Friday, August 26th, 2011

It’s Friday and that’s a good reason to smile! Here are a few more . . .

A genuine smile increases the production of serotonin, the happy hormone.

Smiling builds bridges to other people around us. It keeps us from remaining aloof and separate from one another. Babies as young as three weeks old even recognize smiling as a bonding behavior.

One smile uses more than 16 muscles.

School of Fish – Say What? Ceviche!

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Quality Seafood Market, writes a monthly article for Live Oak Pharmacy on seafood as an essential part of whole body wellness.

It’s still too hot to fire up that oven. Ceviche (say-VEE-chay) is a great hot weather meal. It requires no heat and very little prep time. What’s more, it’s cool and refreshing! This week, I’d like to share a few pointers that I learned from my fellow fishmonger, Ryan Verheyn of Quality Seafood Market, on how to safely prepare ceviche. Most recipes call for marinating the seafood (fish, shrimp, scallops, octopus, and squid are all popular choices) for 1-5 hours in citric acid (i.e., lime juice) before consumption. The fresher the seafood and the longer it marinates, the more bacteria is killed by the acid and the safer the ceviche is to eat. However, Ryan recommends an even more sanitary method than just selecting a fresh catch and marinating it. Ryan marinates just the seafood, leaving the other ingredients aside, in the citric acid for 5 hours or overnight, if possible. This ensures that the maximum amount of bacteria bites the dust. When he’s ready to serve the ceviche, Ryan drains the seafood, discards the marinade and replenishes it with fresh lime juice. Then he adds his other fresh ingredients, such as diced jalapeño and onion, chopped tomato, and minced garlic and cilantro. The new lime juice has a brighter, fresher flavor, not to mention it’s free of that fishy marinade.

As always, when making ceviche, be sure to buy seafood from a reputable, busy market that is known for its high turnover of product (you don’t want fish that’s been sitting around all week). Also, ask your monger what fish she recommends that day. What’s the freshest? What has the right texture and flavor for ceviche? My personal favorite is black drum. It’s lean, white, and firm. It has a mild flavor and takes to the flavors of other fresh ingredients well. Finally, it’s a local, wild-caught Texas favorite. Now what could be more refreshing than supporting your local fisherman? See you in the market!

Tomorrow is International Homeless Animals’ Day

Friday, August 19th, 2011

What better way to celebrate than to adopt a new member of the family! Studies show that people who own pets are healthier! Pet owners have greater self-esteem, are more physically fit, less lonely, more conscientious, more extroverted and tend to be less fearful!

There are plenty of places in Austin that offer adoption services.

A healthy way to reduce stress

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Too much stress is bad for you. Often, a simple attitude adjustment is enough to keep stress in check. And one of the most overlooked attitudes is the attitude of gratitude. If we change our perceptions and reactions to stress-causing events and people, we can live a more serene life. Here are some tips on adopting the attitude of gratitude:

  1. Make a list of people, things, and events for which you’re thankful. This can include family, friends, gifts, jobs, vacation, professional accomplishments, etc.
  2. Make a list of why you’re grateful for each of those people, things, and events.
  3. Determine ways in which you can identify more of those people or create more of those situations in your life.
  4. Find ways to acknowledge and show your gratitude. They can include an e-mail, a note of thanks, a visit, a card, etc.
  5. Increase your awareness of common events for which you are grateful, from a sunset to the completion of a minor task or chore.
  6. Be grateful to yourself. If you catch yourself being harder on yourself than others, stop and reframe into the positive.

Don’t cut back on these necessities

Monday, July 11th, 2011

You can’t be too careful with your money these days, but no matter how tough things get, there are a few areas where you don’t want to cut back. You’ll save money in the long run by spending it on these items:

  • Insurance. The premiums may seem expensive, but a car accident or a hospital stay will cost more.
  • Home and car maintenance. Invest in the upkeep of your house and your car to avoid bigger expenses should something go wrong.
  • Medical fees. It’s cheaper to see your doctor and dentist regularly so you can take care of problems before they become serious health issues.
  • Good food. Prepackaged food may seem less expensive, but if it’s bad for you, you aren’t getting a bargain. Invest in nutrition, not junk.
And last but not least . . .
  • Prescription Medications. It’s important to take your medications the way they are prescribed and not skipping dosages or cutting pills in half to make them last longer!
If you have questions about your medications, come in and talk to our pharmacist today! Live Oak Pharmacy is Austin’s pharmacy and we are here to help and answer your question! Stop in today and find out why readers of the Austin Chronicle voted us Best New Local Business!

Thank You

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

At Live Oak Pharmacy our social media policy has always been to focus more on what is happening in the community, with our partners and health care providers and of course you, our patients and customers. And as we progress into our second year that goal is the same but we hope that you’ll indulge us a moment as we share some exciting things with you!

Both of our owners had articles published recently in industry journals. Nathan’s article Authorized Generic Drugs appeared in the June issue of U.S. Pharmacist and Scot’s article Socially Networked made the cover of America’s Pharmacist.

Also this month, the Human Rights Campaign‘s Annual Health Equality Index came out. Although the index does not focus specifically on pharmacy, Live Oak Pharmacy was included for our dedication to the LGBT community. We’re proud to be the only business in Texas that was mentioned in the index and we hope that next year there will be more to join us.

Later this month, both Scot & Nathan will be headed down under to Australia to speak with PCCA (Professional Compounding Chemists of Australia) about compounding and marketing.

While we’re certainly proud of all of these accomplishments, we know that we wouldn’t have achieved them without you, our patients, customers and partners. So from all of us at Live Oak Pharmacy, thank you for choosing us to be your pharmacy! Our goal is to be customized for you!

Live Oak Pharmacy is an Austin Pharmacy located in downtown Austin. Our goal is to offer you a unique experience of health and wellness in a professional pharmacy setting. Come in today and find out why reader’s of the Austin Chronicle voted us Best New Local Business!

Go back to basics to ease back pain

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Your parents told you to sit up straight, but if you slump in your chair, you could be putting unnecessary and painful strain on your back. Here are some basic tips to improve your sitting posture:

  • Pick a chair that fits your body. The seat should fit the distance from your buttocks to your knees. And your chair should be the right height from your knees to the floor for your legs to be straight and comfortable.
  • Support your lower back. Use pillows with office chairs (or the seat of your car).
  • Don’t sit with your head forward. You’ll put added strain on your spine. Sit up straight (Yes, Mom), and try not to lean your body to one side or the other.

Have more questions about back pain? Did you know that Live Oak Pharmacy can work with your physician to compound a topical pain reliever? Ask us for details next time you’re in the pharmacy! And when you transfer a prescription into Live Oak Pharmacy you can get a $15 gift coupon to spend in the store. Download your coupon here!
